HOW TO JOIN
When you ask to join our dojo, you are asking us to recommend you to Grandmaster Tanemura for membership in the Genbukan-KJJR organization. By accepting you into the Genbukan-KJJR organization, Grandmaster Tanemura is giving us permission to teach you the Genbukan-KJJR (Tanemura-Ha) bujutsu. This is a big responsibility and we take it very seriously. We are, in essence, making a long-term commitment to your physical, mental, and spiritual development. |

Candidates usually follow a five step process.
STEP 1 - DO YOUR RESEARCH
This web site is the way we share basic information about our dojo with outsiders. If you're curious about us, you must review every page of this web site. It has evolved from decades of questions from sincere inquirers. We intend this web site to convey honest and accurate information about who we are and what we do as martial artists. If you like what you see, we invite you to introduce yourself.

STEP 2 - REACH OUT TO US
Contact us by email to politely introduce yourself. This is basic good manners in Japan, the standard for everything we do in the dojo. Provide some information about yourself, like your location, age, general physical condition, martial arts experience, reasons for joining, etc. If the communication goes well, ask permission to visit the dojo.

STEP 3 - VISIT THE DOJO
Visit us in person (Landenberg, PA) or remotely (online, via Zoom) to participate in a private sample class. You will meet a certified Genbukan-KJJR instructor, learn more about our dojo, and experience traditional-style Japanese martial arts training. You should demonstrate sincerity and good manners. If the visit goes well, ask permission to continue for a trial period, usually one to two months.

STEP 4 - TRY OUT REGULAR TRAINING
The trial period provides an opportunity for both parties to evaluate each other within the regular cadence of training. Traditional Japanese martial arts training is not for everyone. We're looking for certain qualities, like respect and good manners, receptivity to instruction and correction, dedication to regular training (both in-class and out-of-class), etc. If the trial period goes well, ask permission to join the dojo.

STEP 5 - JOIN UP, JOURNEY TOGETHER
Traditional martial arts training is like a forging process. Success takes time and patience, and training can be as challenging as it is rewarding. Joining our dojo means becoming part of a group that is both local and international. We are part of a martial "family" that spans the globe, with each local group connected to the Genbukan Honbu Dojo in Japan. We succeed because of the support we receive from follow members. We journey together.
