IN-PERSON CLASSES

Genbukan Unryu Dojo has resumed in-person classes with certain restrictions, including appropriate health and safety protocols. At in-person classes, students can learn the full range of Genbukan martial arts.
Two types of martial arts classes are routinely offered:
  1. Core classes provide instruction in the GWNF-KJJR foundational gendai systems (unarmed, sword, and staff), with rank testing in these arts.
  2. Core Supplement classes provide a deep dive into the gendai systems, both foundational and specialized, and their koryu sources.
SELF DEFENSE ART (go-shin-jutsu)
In addition to formal martial arts, we offer instruction in practical or "street" self-defense. The Art of Self Defense (AOSD) is not a martial art but a practical self-defense system that teaches:
  1. How to avoid an assault through a prevention strategy, and,
  2. How to escape a physical attack using simple yet effective self-defense techniques.
AOSD covers a wide range of potentially vulnerable/dangerous situations occurring at home, school/work, and while traveling. Self-defense techniques address a wide range of unarmed and armed attacks. Also, students learn how to use practical hand tools—stick, pen, keychain fob, etc.—which can increase the efficacy of any self-defense technique.
CLASS SCHEDULE
The class schedule is for comparison purposes only, actual times and topics may vary. All classes are considered private and attendance is by appointment only. Visit the online Dojo Store to register.
All students, members and non-members alike, are expected to sign a liability waiver and health supplement and follow the current health protocol and dojo rules.

REMOTE CLASSES

In addition to in-person classes, Unryu Dojo offers students an opportunity to attend classes remotely. Remote learning offers students a convenient, low-cost way to learn new material or refine their knowledge of material already received. Remote learning can serve a variety of goals, e.g., diagnostic, instructional, and evaluative (testing for rank promotion). For example, a student might want help with a specific kata s/he finds especially challenging. Or, perhaps a student wants to go a bit deeper into a kata, to begin learning its variations (henka) and receive special oral teachings (kuden). Remote learning can focus on almost any area covered in the dojo. Examples of possible topics include: physical conditioning; unarmed/sword/staff kata; and meditation exercises. Remote learning can assist students at any phase of their development, beginner through advanced.
All remote classes are by appointment only. Begin by contacting the dojo to discuss your interest, then visit the online Dojo Store to register for a class. Once registered, an instructor will contact you to arrange a mutually convenient appointment time.
