Unryu Dojo has resumed in-person classes with certain restrictions, including appropriate health and safety protocols. At in-person classes, member-students can learn the full range of Genbukan martial arts. Three types of martial arts classes are routinely offered:
- Core Training classes focus on the foundational unarmed, sword, and staff (gendai) systems.
- Supplemental Training classes allow students to explore the gendai systems, along with their koryu sources, in greater depth.
- Special Training classes, invitation only events, provide high-level instruction on training and self-defense topics.
In addition to formal martial arts, we offer instruction in practical or "street" self-defense. The Art of Self Defense (AOSD) is not a martial art but a practical self-defense system that teaches: (1) how to avoid an assault through a prevention strategy; and (2), how to escape an assault using simple yet effective self-defense techniques. The system treats a wide range of potentially vulnerable/dangerous situations, including those occurring at home and school or work as well as while traveling. Self-defense techniques address a wide range of unarmed and armed assaults. Also, students learn how to use practical hand tools—stick, pen, keychain fob, etc.—which can enhance the efficacy of any self-defense technique.
All in-person classes are by appointment only. Visit the online Dojo Store to register for a class. While we do not have space for "spectators," inquirers (visitors) are welcome to participate in a free sample class; no prior martial arts experience is necessary.
All students, members and non-members alike, are expected to observe the dojo rules (Dojo Kun).
